A 1,500 SF addition and 1,500 sf remodel of an existing 3/4 Cape Cod house in Pasadena, California. The residence is located within a Historic District and the parts of the house that are visible from the street are to be preserved.
Owner direction is to re-program the house to account for a growing family and provide an open floor plan where most of the house activities will take place.
The design concept is to reconfigure the sleeping quarters and move them to the east side, locating the activities on the west side where ample sunlight will be available throughout the day and afternoon.
Similar to how the fireplace and oven were the central element in traditional Cape Cod architecture, in the proposed design it's the kitchen and breakfast table that has informally become the center of the family activities. It's where the kids start their day, and the owners spends time working late into the night both on kid's homework and their business.
