This 2,500-square-foot residence was thoughtfully designed to respond to the unique character of its hillside site in the Mount Washington/Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Located on the northern portion of a large multi-dwelling property that already contained an existing home to the south, the new residence was conceived to remain understated from the public realm. The street-facing elevation presents itself as a modest single-story home, allowing the building to blend into the surrounding neighborhood while minimizing its visual presence. As the site slopes away from the street, the home unfolds into a two-story composition that embraces the topography and opens toward expansive views beyond the rear yard.

The design prioritizes the relationship between indoor and outdoor living, with generous glazing, expansive decks, and carefully positioned living spaces oriented toward the landscape and panoramic vistas. Natural materials, including warm wood soffits, exposed concrete retaining walls, and horizontal fiber cement siding, create a contemporary yet grounded architectural expression that complements the hillside setting. By concealing its full scale from the street while fully engaging the dramatic terrain at the rear, the residence achieves a balance between neighborhood sensitivity and modern living, providing a light-filled family home that takes full advantage of its exceptional site and Southern California climate.
