Sheri Lane is a complete reimagining of a mid-century residence in Long Beach, California. The project is particularly meaningful because the homeowner, Julia, is an architect and a college classmate of principal architect Sevak Karabachian. Although Julia works on large-scale projects professionally, she entrusted Karabachian Architects, Inc. with the design of her own home—a level of confidence that shaped the project’s collaborative spirit.

The design focused on creating calm, highly resolved spaces defined by natural materials, carefully proportioned openings, and a restrained palette of wood, stone, and soft, filtered light. Existing spaces were reorganized to improve flow and strengthen the connection between interior living areas and the landscape. Details throughout the home—from custom millwork and flush transitions to precisely framed views—were refined through an open dialogue between architect and client, allowing both parties to pursue design ideas without compromise.

Rather than being driven by affordability or sustainability targets, the project was an exercise in trust, craftsmanship, and shared architectural values. The close relationship between client and architect enabled a level of experimentation and attention to detail that ultimately defines the character of the home.
